About the Doctors

Dr. Clark Thomas, DMD

Dr. Thomas is a children's dental specialist, who is passionate about helping children and teenagers maintain healthy and beautiful smiles by helping instill in them a positive attitude towards dentistry. He is a 2007 graduate of the Pediatric Residency Program at the University of Alabama/Birmingham, where he developed expertise in treating patients with special needs. Dr. Thomas is certified in the use of oral sedation and when needed can take a child to general anesthesia. Dr. Thomas has completed Board Certification in Pediatric Dentistry. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Thomas grew up in Montgomery and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Mississippi. He completed his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) at UAB and obtained his Alabama State Dental License in 2001. From 2001 to 2005, he was Chief Dental Officer for the Indian Health Service providing dentistry for Ignacio, Colorado and Santa Fe, New Mexico area Indian tribes. It was during this time that Dr. Thomas realized his gift for working with children and decided to return to his home state and enter the UAB Pediatric Residency Program. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association. He resides in Vestavia with his wife, Pate, who holds a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Alabama, and their daughters, Ashby and Myers.

Dr. Lauten Johnson, DMD

Dr. Johnson shares Dr. Thomas's goal of instilling in children a positive attitude towards dentistry. He completed his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) at UAB and obtained his Alabama State Dental License in 2006. He completed his residency in pediatrics in 2008. Dr. Johnson is certified in the use of oral sedation and has privileges at Children's Hospital and when needed can take a child to general anesthesia. In 2006, he won two clinical awards in excellence at UAB. First, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Pre-doctoral Student Award which is given to the student with the greatest proficiency and interest in Pediatric Dentistry. Secondly, the Birmingham District Dental Society Award for outstanding clinical ability.

Dr. Johnson also leads a team of dentists and staff to Mexico where they provide dental services to the underprivileged. The team does annually to the Yucatan Peninsula and recently he founded the Smile Foundation to help promote awareness and to raise money for supplies.

Currently Dr. Johnson practices in both locations Hoover and off of Montclair Road. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association. Dr. Johnson is married to Betts Johnson and is the father of three, Callie (6), Sanders (4), and Mary Carmen (3).

Financial/Insurance

Please familiarize yourself with the information that follows. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask one of our business office staff.

  • Please be aware that the parent bringing the child to our office is legally responsible for payment of all charges. We cannot send statements to other persons.
  • We ask that any co-pays, deductibles, or other charges incurred be paid at the time of service. We gladly accept Cash, Check, Visa and Master card payments.
  • We do not accept any post-dated checks.
  • We do not offer in-house payment plans.

  • Dental Insurance: There is no direct relationship between our office and your insurance company. The type of plan chosen by you, and/or your employer determines your insurance benefits. As such, we have no say in the selection of your insurance company, no control over the terms of your contract, the methods of reimbursement or the determination of your insurance benefits. We will accept assignment of benefits from your insurance company; however you are responsible for the full balance including any amount that is not paid by your insurance company.

    We are preferred providers for the following insurance companies:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama
  • Delta Dental
  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • Guardian
  • Medicaid
  • Metlife
  • Southland
  • United Concordia

  • We will gladly file all other insurances, with the understanding that patients will not receive the benefits of a PPO provider.

    Pre-treatment Authorization: Some insurance companies recommend an estimate of the work to be done and the fees to be charged before determining their benefits to you. If so, we will provide you with the pre-treatment fee estimate. In this case, it will be up to you to determine if you wish to proceed with treatment before the insurance benefit is determined.

    Appliances: The cost of the appliance must be paid on the day your child's impressions are taken. This is necessary because our office must pay the lab bills when appliances are ordered, not when they are completed.

    Emergency treatment: All emergency treatment must be paid in full at the time the service is rendered.

    Office Policies

    We are open to serve you, answer questions or schedule an appointment during the following hours:

    Monday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Wednesday - Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Closed for lunch from 12-1 daily

    Appointment Policy

    The scheduled appointment is reserved specifically for your child. Any change in this appointment affects many patients. If a cancellation is unavoidable, please call the office at least 24 hours in advance so that we may give that time to another patient. We will contact all patients via phone 2 days prior to their appointments to confirm appointment time and date. Please ask about our NEW options for email and text messaging for confirmations!

    We strive to see all patients on time for their scheduled appointment. There are times when our schedule is delayed in order to accommodate an injured child or an emergency. Please accept our apology in advance should this occur during your appointment.

    Please plan to arrive 5 minutes or more before your scheduled appointment to allow time to complete any additional paperwork and see your child on time.

    If you arrive 10-15 minutes late for your appointment, you may be asked to reschedule for the next available appointment time.

    Broken or missed appointments affect many people. If two (2) broken/missed appointments or two (2) cancellations occur without 24-hour notice, our office reserves the right to NOT schedule any subsequent appointments.

    For your comfort, one adult is welcome but not required to accompany your child to the operatory. We encourage self independence to help promote the growth and development of your child. For the safety and privacy of the other patients, we ask all other family members remain in the reception room with a supervisory adult.

    The use of cellular phones is prohibited in the operatory. The extra conversation carried on by others in the clinical area can be most distracting to children, preventing us from close, careful communication with each young patient.
