Dental Mission Trip 2011

This year Pediatric & Adolescent Dentistry hosted their third annual Dental Mission trip to Mexico from June 18 Ð June 25. Dr. Lauten Johnson, Sara Claire Martin, Claire Mitchell, Brandon Pennington, and Carolyne Nix along with six others from Alabama traveled to Isla Mujeres, Mexico to educate citizens of all ages about dental hygiene. With only three members who speak fluent Spanish, the group was given permission to use the Red Cross to house dental procedures such as cleanings, extractions, and fillings. This year, they treated over 430 patients.

"Mission work brought me to dentistry", says Dr. Johnson. Before attending UAB Dental School, Dr. Johnson participated in dental mission trips to Peru, Mexico, and Costa Rica. "Dental care is needed so badly everywhere but not accessible to many countries; which is why I think that it is important to do this trip annually".
