Dental Mission Trip 2009

This year Pediatric & Adolescent Dentistry is hosting their first annual Dental Mission trip in Mexico from June 22nd-June 29th. Dr. Lauten Johnson and Mallory Phillips along with eight others from Alabama will be traveling to Isla Mujeres, Mexico to educate citizens of all ages about dental hygiene and perform much needed dental care for many people. Three people joining Dr. Johnson and Mallory on the trip are Pre-Dental students hoping to gain some hands-on experience in a place where their services will be greatly appreciated. With only three members who speak fluent Spanish, the group has been given permission to use the only dental clinic in the area to house complicated dental procedures.

“Mission work brought me to dentistry”, says Dr. Johnson. Before attending UAB Dental School, Dr. Johnson participated in dental mission trips to Peru, Mexico, and Costa Rica. “Dental care is needed so badly everywhere but not accessible to many countries; which is why I think that it is important to do this trip annually”.

Mallory Phillips, a two year employee at Pediatric & Adolescent dentistry, is using her vacation time to make the trip on June 22. “I have always had a passion for helping people, and I think it will be interesting to see if we recognize the same people each year that we return.”
