Dental Mission Trip to Isla Mujeres, Mexico 2013
Another wonderful year serving the people of Isla Mujeres has come and gone! In May, we closed both offices so that both Dr. Lauten Johnson and Dr. Clark Thomas could treat hundreds of patients in Isla. Employees Claire Mitchell and Meg Gibson along with the rest of the group, from all around the nation, joined once again to treat and educate the people in Isla and the surrounding area.
This year we saw the fruits of our labor as patients traveled from Cancun, and we explored the option of opening a second clinic. We saw about 200 more patients this year at a grand total of 700 patients.
Having built strong relationships over the years with the citizens in the area of "Guadalupana", we decided to all plan a day where we gave back in other ways than dentistry. We brought food, water, and a tarp to make a roof on one home.
The trip is only going to get bigger and more developed, and we couldn't do it without the support of our patients here in Birmingham. Thank you from the entire staff to all who have allowed us to keep serving the people of Isla Mujeres.
"Mission work brought me to dentistry", says Dr. Johnson. Before attending UAB Dental School, Dr. Johnson participated in dental mission trips to Peru, Mexico, and Costa Rica. "Dental care is of such great need everywhere but not accessible in many countries which is why I think that it is important to do this trip annually".
